The Black Business Consortium of Evanston/Northshore (BBCENS) is a group of Black business owners who have agreed to come together to share resources, network, discuss common concerns, and to facilitate support among each other.
The BBCENS was conceptualized in January of 2015 by business owners Clarence and Wendy Weaver (C&W Market and Ice Cream Parlor) and Larry and Jean Murphy (YoFresh Yogurt Cafe). While acknowledging the many contributions of early 20th Century business pioneers such as Sam McKinley (Best Taxi) and Carl Davis (Davis Transportation) plus, they envisioned the creation of a group of business owners who could provide networking support, resources, and technical assistance to each other. In February, 2015, their vision materialized as over 20 Black business owners came together at a joint meeting and reception to discuss how best to make this happen. Two viable ideas that emerged from the initial group meeting gave birth to the creation of a Directory of Black-owned businesses, and a tour of the same, with a target date of Black History month, 2016. The idea was also floated to have, at some point, a black business Expo.
The BBCENS is now working in cooperation with the City of Evanston's Economic Development Department to plan the 2017 Le Tour de Noir Entreprise Evanston and Black Business Expo, scheduled for Saturday, February 25, 2017. This cooperative effort will provide historical history of century long entrepreneurship, visibility to the largerEvanston public, plus media and personnel resources to expand and enhance the work of the BBCENS.
For further information contact Larry or Jean Murphy at (847) 859-6408.
